IMPD Downtown Narcotics Detectives execute search warrant that yields several firearms and drugs

INDIANAPOLIS – As part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD)’s continued efforts to disrupt the spread of violence by targeting the cycle of drugs and illegally-possessed firearms, narcotics detectives serve search warrant that nets drugs, guns, and two arrests.

Just after 6 p.m. on 11/28/2018, detectives with the IMPD Downtown, North District Narcotic Units, and Criminal Interdiction Unit, joined together to investigate a report of suspected synthetic marijuana dealing. Detective identified Johnnie Adams Jr. (27) as the alleged dealer. Officers pulled Adams over on a traffic stop and allegedly located a loaded handgun, several ounces of synthetic marijuana, and $1,333 in cash. Detectives arrested Adams on-scene where he was preliminarily charged with serious violent felon in possession of a handgun, dealing/possession of synthetic marijuana, and dealing/possession of marijuana.

As detectives continued the investigation, they applied for and were granted a search warrant for Adam’s residence in the 2900 blk of N Delaware St. IMPD SWAT executed the search warrant and detained Johnnie Adams Sr (53). Detectives searched the residence and located the following:

  • Estimated 30lbs synthetic marijuana/spice
  • Glass jars containing marijuana
  • 3 assault rifles
  • 3 handguns
  • Silencer for a handgun
  • Bulletproof vest
  • Drug dealing paraphernalia

Johnnie Adams Sr. was arrested and preliminarily charged with serious violent felon in possession of a handgun, dealing/possession of synthetic marijuana, and maintaining a common nuisance.  Johnnie Adams Jr. was additionally charged with maintaining a common nuisance.  Both suspects were later transported to the Marion County Lockup facility for processing. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision.

This crackdown on the illegal-possession of firearms in neighborhoods was called for by the City’s violence reduction strategy. Announced last December, the strategy also focuses on expanding access to social services and investing in neighborhood-level interventions.

A charge of a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
