Two IMPD officers are shot at while conducting a traffic stop on the southwest side

INDIANAPOLIS-On January 15, 2018 at approximately 7:30 p.m. officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Howard street and Shepard Street on the cities near southwest side.  During the course of the traffic stop, a man exited the passenger side of the vehicle and started firing at the two officers inside the police vehicle, striking the vehicle multiple times.  The officers did not return fire.

The suspect returned to the vehicle as the driver exited and surrendered themselves to police.  The male suspect  then fled in the vehicle.

Officers from all six of the city’s districts responded to assist in the search for the suspect.  Through investigative methods, it was determined that the suspect entered a home in the 1300 block of South Belmont Avenue.  IMPD’s SWAT team was called to the scene and negotiators attempted to contact the suspect multiple times.  After attempts at negotiation were exhausted, officers obtained a signed warrant and entered the home.  SWAT members located the suspect in the home and took him into custody.

IMPD continues to urge anyone with information on criminal activity to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317.262.8477 or (TIPS).
