Public Input Sought on Improvements to Modernize Rockville Road through June 30th

INDIANAPOLIS (June 1, 2020) — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is asking the public to share ideas and help prioritize improvements for the future of Rockville Road (U.S. 36) between Raceway Road and I-465. A public involvement period is launching today and will continue through June 30 to gather important input from the public.

The public is encouraged to watch a short project overview video, review project information and complete an online questionnaire to prioritize potential road work to improve safety and relieve congestion. Responses will be accepted through June 30. To watch the video, review project documents and complete the questionnaire, visit ModernRockville.com.

The outreach will help introduce the Modern Rockville Road project to the public, share results of the initial public questionnaire and solicit additional feedback. The public involvement period takes the place of a public meeting originally expected this spring, but no longer possible with the social distancing requirements necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The information being gathered during the public involvement period will help solidify top priorities for the corridor and inform the engineering phase of the project. That phase of the project will focus on solving top issues identified with possible improvements expected to be presented late this year. Additional public outreach will be planned at that time to share information and gather more feedback from the public.

Paper copies of the questionnaire, fact sheet and a summary of initial questionnaire responses are available by request. In addition, INDOT will provide accommodations for persons of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) requiring auxiliary aids including language interpretation services and document conversion. The public may make such requests by calling 855-INDOT4U (1-855-463-6848) or submitting the request by email to INDOT@indot.in.gov. The mailing address should be included.

More than 1,900 people responded to an initial questionnaire earlier this year, before state and local stay-at-home orders began in March. Respondents ranked traffic congestion and motorist safety as the top long-term issues facing Rockville Road. Click here to find a summary of questionnaire results. The new questionnaire builds on the earlier results and focuses on segments of Rockville Road.

INDOT launched the Modern Rockville Road project earlier this year to gather information about the east-west highway. The information gathered, including public input, will help the Project Team prioritize issues facing the corridor and identify next steps. Depending on the improvements recommended, construction would begin no earlier than 2023.

The public may follow the project on Facebook or Twitter and sign up for project updates by e-mail or text message at ModernRockville.com.
