Paul Poteet started as a disc jockey in Huntington and Ft. Wayne Indiana in 1979 and was first on the air in Indy while a teenager on Q95 in 1982. He first did weather on TV in 1986 for Channel 4. He’s always done radio while doing television. Paul also began doing voiceovers and corporate narrations in the early 80s and still does them today for places like Family Leisure, Unique Home Solutions, and dozens of companies as varied as Scotty’s Brewhouse and Eli Lilly. He’s even been the voiceover host of the Indy Zoo dolphin shows!
IU basketball rubbed off on him at Channel 4 – he produced and syndicated sports shows with Ted Kitchel and Steve Alford in the late 80s and early 90s while doing some radio talk and some DJ-ing from time to time. He returned to the TV weather maps in the early 90s on the weekends in Lafayette and in the mid 90s into the 21st century on Channel 6. He has also done feature reporting for WTHR and weather for WISH TV. He is the co-host of “Boomer TV,” a weekly magazine show on WFYI.
His radio weather service began in 1993 and has never stopped. He has been a part of WYRZ since the station’s beginning. He also provides video weather content for the Madison County Visitors Bureau, the Hamilton County Reporter, and nationwide clients like Visit My Smokies, and Interactive Hail Maps.
In addition to diversifying within media, Poteet is also diversified outside of it. In 2012 he purchased a business run for years by his friend, the late meteorologist Cliff Nicholson. “Weather History Research” provides data on past weather events, primarily to insurance companies and attorneys around the country.
Paul and “Mrs. P” have been married for over 36 years, and have two sons and two grandsons. He loves spending time with his family, traveling, and running. (Sometimes all at the same time.)
