INDIANAPOLIS – April 25, 2016 – On Saturday, April 23, the Indiana State Teachers Association honored Joyce J. Click with the 2015 Horace Mann Hoosier Educator of the Year Award at its annual Representative Assembly meeting. This award honors educators who recognize, reward and promote excellence in the teaching and advocacy of education.
Click is Indiana’s first Nationally Board Certified Teacher in music. She has taught for 37 years in the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township.
“Joyce exemplifies going above and beyond,” said ISTA President Teresa Meredith. “She gets it-she understands that not all needs can be met during the school day, so she works hard to build community partnerships to make things happen for her students. She is truly one of the best in her field.”
She recently was named a Grammy Award semi-finalist as the top 25 of 5,000 nationally nominated music teachers. She has received numerous awards for her teaching, including Washington Township Teacher of the Year, Semi-Finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year, Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, Shining Star Award, and two Lilly Creativity Fellowships.
Click currently teaches at North Central High School, where she directs five choirs, including the King’s Court Singers (North Central’s madrigal choir), and also directs the Handbell Ringing Club. Her choirs have received superior (Gold Medal) ratings for the past 37 years as well as numerous choirs of distinction awards and state finalist awards
