Master Trooper Charles Boller, a 15 ½ year veteran of the ISP was awarded both the Combat Action Award and the Bronze Star Award for his actions on November 27, 2004. Trooper Boller responded to a violent domestic disturbance call involving a mother and son in rural Putnam County. The mother was able to flee the residence, take a position outside the front door of the home behind a fence and call 911. As Boller and other local officers arrived, they were immediately met with gunfire from the son inside the residence. Believing the level of danger was increasing for the mother, Boller initiated a plan to extract her to a safe location. Boller, two Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies, and a Greencastle Police officer safely rescued the female while coming under additional gunfire from the suspect. The suspect eventually surrendered and received a 45-year sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections. Boller’s award reads in part “Trooper Boller’s actions involved personal bravery and self-sacrifice at a level clearly beyond expectations”.
