IMPD Homicide detectives conducting a death investigation in the 700 block of South Bosart Avenue

INDIANAPOLIS – Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) are investigating the fatal shooting of a man early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 6 a.m., officers responded to a person shot in the 700 block of South Bosart Avenue. Inside the residence, they found 53-year-old James Neal with multiple gunshot wounds. Neal was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS medics.

According to detectives, a family of three was asleep when they were awakened by the sounds of Neal inside their home. The husband confronted Neal with a shotgun, and the two struggled over the weapon. The wife got a second weapon from another room and also confronted Neal. During the struggle, both residents fired their weapons fatally wounding Neal. The man and woman, and their 11-year-old daughter, were unharmed. The couple cooperated fully with Homicide detectives and were released after questioning.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review this case for a charging decision.
