IMPD 16th Recruit Class graduates, ready to serve Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and Chief Bryan Roach are pleased to announce the graduation of the IMPD 16th Recruit Class. These 49 new probationary officers are set to begin their first assignments serving Indianapolis neighborhoods.

“As these 49 individuals receive their first beat assignments, they join some of the finest officers in the city – men and women who serve our community with professionalism and dedication,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “With this group of officers joining our force, the bonds necessary to effectively police a city will be strengthened and IMPD’s ability to make a positive impact in Indianapolis neighborhoods will grow.”

“Over 47 weeks of training, the 16th Recruit Class has proven they are ready to protect and serve the people of Indianapolis” stated Chief Bryan Roach. “These individuals join the men and women of IMPD in working every day to make our city safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”

The class of 49 new officers includes 4 black females, 1 hispanic female, and 6 white females, as well as 10 black males, 1 hispanic male, 26 white males, and 1 male who identified as other. This class represents IMPD’s continued efforts to build a police force that reflects the community it serves.

The 16th IMPD Recruit Class was sworn-in on December 18, 2017.  These officers have been assigned to the Training Division for the past 47 weeks. The recruit training curriculum consists of 1,048 hours of classroom and scenario-based training and 20 weeks of on-the-job training in the Field Training Program.

Mayor Hogsett and the City-County Council have fully funded two recruit classes next year keeping the City on a path to fully funding a net gain of 150 officers over the 2015 staffing levels. Increased staffing levels allow the IMPD to continue to roll out additional, smaller beats as part of the return to community-based beat policing – supporting efforts to target those who perpetrate violence and build stronger relationships with the community. The IMPD is currently recruiting for entry-level and experienced officers to join the department as part of the 19th Recruit Class. Learn more and apply at joinimpd.indy.gov.

The 16th Recruit Class is the second class of officers to receive their first assignments in a neighborhood instead of a zone since the return to community-based beat policing. Please join us in congratulating the 16th Recruit Class as they begin their service to Indianapolis neighborhoods!
