I-70 Crash Claims the Life of a Six Year Old Child

Indianapolis, IN – At approximately 8:30 p.m., Thursday June 27, 2024, Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls about a serious crash on I-70 eastbound near the 80.3 mile marker, commonly called the south split in Indianapolis. Within minutes Troopers and members of the Indianapolis Fire Department along with IEMS were on scene and began rescue efforts. There were five people seriously injured, two adults and three children. All of the injured people were transported to area hospitals. A six year old girl was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Preliminary investigation at the crash scene determined a van, occupied by two adults and three children, had become disabled in the left lane of I-70. A semi tractor-trailer struck the back of the stopped van. Investigators believe the reason the van stopped in the lane was due to a flat tire, there is no left side shoulder on this portion of the interstate large enough to pull a vehicle out of the roadway. Neither alcohol, nor drugs is suspected to have contributed to the crash by either of the involved drivers. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The circumstances of this crash are still under investigation, the left lanes of I-70 were closed for nearly five hours while this crash was investigated and the scene was cleared. The extent of the injuries to the other people involved is unknown at this time, however they are all in stable condition.

Indiana State Police was assisted by the Indianapolis Fire Department, IEMS, INDOT, Hoosier Helpers and the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
