DANVILLE, IN (July 20, 2024) – The first half of the year has been full of unique project ideas and events to celebrate Hendricks County’s Bicentennial, and the Bicentennial Committee has endorsed nearly 50 so far.
As submissions continue to pour in, the committee is challenging the community to continue to think of ways to recognize and celebrate the county’s 200th birthday hoping to reach a total of 100 endorsed events and projects by the end of the year.
This month, four more events and projects were endorsed and include plenty of history, recognition and celebration.
The Danville Chamber of Commerce has announced a new award for their annual Danville Community Awards night. They will select one member of the community for a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing someone who has made a profound and sustained contribution to the greater Hendricks County community over their lifetime.
In addition, the Brownsburg and Avon-Washington Township Public Libraries will offer events throughout the fall, sharing the history of the county.
On Oct. 11, the Avon-Washington Township Public Library will offer a Cemetery Tour of Shiloh Cemetery, established in 1823 and the burial plots of Civil War veterans and men and women who settled the Washington Township area.
On Oct. 26, Brownsburg Public Library will host “Turning the Pages of Time: Celebrating Hendricks County’s Bicentennial.” Guests will hear from a panel of local authors and visit the Reminisce Room, full of old photos and yearbooks from days past.
The Brownsburg Library staff plans to plant a native plants path behind the library, one of the many project ideas underway in the community.
Another project includes the Koinonia group at Avon United Methodist Church. The women’s group are looming mats for the homeless from recycled plastic grocery bags. In honor of the Bicentennial, they are now looming mats in red, white and blue to present to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) of Hendricks County and the Brownsburg American Legion.
The Bicentennial Committee looks forward to additional ideas for projects and events across the county. You can Submit your project or event for endorsement on the Bicentennial website.
