Coats Supports Every Child Achieves Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today voted for the Every Child Achieves Act, bipartisan legislation that would restore to states and school districts the responsibility for education accountability. The bill passed the Senate 81 to 17.

“The Every Child Achieves Act ends the Common Core mandate and restores responsibility for accountability standards back to states,” said Coats. “Defeating this legislation would continue federal control of education, which is unacceptable. We need to increase state and local control so decisions about our education system are made by those closest to students. Indiana educators know best how to teach Hoosier children.” The Every Child Achieves Act would:

• End the Common Core mandate
• End the need for federal waivers
• End federal test-based accountability
• End national school boards
• Allow states to decide important measures in their accountability standards
