Memorial Marker Honoring National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Steve Stapp to be Unveiled July 2nd

The Town of Brownsburg and the Indiana Racing Memorial Association will unveil a new memorial marker for the Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail honoring Steve Stapp on July 2.

The dedication ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 2 at 6:30 p.m. at 108 N. Jefferson St. The property is the home of the original Stapp shop, where Stapp built championship-winning race cars. Parking will be available at Brownsburg Town Hall.

Stapp began racing at 17, following in his father, Babe Stapp’s, footsteps. After retiring from driving at 25, he became a winning car owner and race car builder He was successful, claiming 51 victories and two National championships in the USAC Sprint Car Series with famed driver, Pancho Carter. Steve was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1999 and USAC Racing Hall of Fame in 2017. Stapp built his shop on Jefferson Street in Brownsburg and ran his racing operations there for over a decade.

“We are honored to pay tribute to the Steve Stapp with this memorial marker,” said Brownsburg Town Council President Ben Lacey. “The Stapp Family helped to establish Brownsburg as a racing community and we’re proud to highlight this important piece of Brownsburg history.”

The Indiana Racing Memorial Association has been instrumental in preserving the history of racing in Indiana. The organization creates memorial markers that honor drivers, mechanics, and contributors to motorsports.

The unveiling event is open to the public. After the unveiling, the Stapp Family will host an open house, featuring an unveiling of a mural featuring generations of Stapp family racing.

This is the seventh memorial marker to be unveiled as part of the Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail, celebrating motorsports history rooted in Indiana.
