INDIANAPOLIS – The Japanese Yoshino cherry blossom trees are blooming in White River State Park, signaling spring’s arrival.
“The blooming of the Japanese cherry trees in White River State Park is a welcome sign that spring has arrived in Indiana. Take some time to visit the park and see the blossoms before they’re gone,” said Jake Oakman, executive director of White River State Park.
In 2012, Indianapolis was gifted 52 Yoshino cherry trees from Japan. The gift celebrated the 100th anniversary of the blooming of cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. and honors the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan.
The 52 cherry blossom trees line the west bank of the White River behind the Indianapolis Zoo’s White River Garden. Visitors can park in the White River State Park parking garage, cross the Old Washington Street Bridge and see the trees near Waterfront Pavilion.
The park is thankful to the Japan-America Society of Indiana (JASI) for furthering this partnership between the park, the state of Indiana, and Japan.
Indianapolis residents and park visitors are encouraged to come to the park and see the cherry blossoms. It is the perfect spot for family photos, a picnic, or a beautiful view of the trees in front of the downtown skyline.
