State Road 267 / I-65 Interchange opening to traffic on or after Dec. 18 near Whitestown

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the State Road 267 / I-65 interchange will open to traffic on or after Sunday, December 18, weather permitting. Crews will also be shifting the interchange into its winter configuration. Right now, due to supply chain issues, there is temporary lighting set up at the interchange. There will be additional lighting work happening in early February, which will require minimal, temporary, nightly ramp closures to install the permanent lighting in the area.

In addition to the installation of permanent lighting, there will be surface work happening in late spring of 2023. Work will also continue through the winter months, weather permitting. During this time, the interchange will remain open to traffic, but will require some restrictions, including alternating lane closures and flagging operations.

Due to supply chain issues and labor shortages the I-65 / County Road 550 South interchange is now expected to be completed after May of 2023. Crews will be working as much as possible through the winter months. Right now, crews are working to complete the hot mix asphalt (HMA) base and intermediate layers, constructing the concrete aprons and curbs, installing traffic signals and installing permanent lighting. Once this interchange is complete, INDOT, along with city officials, will host a ribbon cutting ceremony.

This project was awarded to E&B Paving, Inc. for $62.9 million. Both interchanges will be Diverging Diamond Interchanges, (DDI). A DDI is a type of interchange in which the two directions of traffic on a non-highway road cross to the opposite side on both sides of a bridge. It requires traffic on the highway overpass to briefly and safely drive on the opposite side of the road from what is customary. When entering the DDI, drivers cross over to the left side of the bridge, guided by signals, signs and pavement markings. DDIs are designed to be safer, more efficient and more cost effective than traditional diamond interchanges.

INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone.
