98.9 WYRZ Names Robinson as New Executive Director; Ray to Become President of Board of Directors

Since October 1st, 98.9 WYRZ has been under a new executive director for the first time in its history.

Kevin Robinson (L), Shane Ray (R)

Shane Ray, who has led the station since it went on the air in 2015, is making a move to another role: president of the 98.9 WYRZ board of directors.

The new executive director will be Kevin Robinson, currently an air personality at the station and 98.9 WYRZ board president.

“It was a great day in my life and career,” says Ray of the station’s first day on the air. “It never could have happened without the support of Hendricks County, the 98.9 WYRZ board of directors, and our engineer, Bruce Quinn”.

“Most of all my wife, Teresa. Now I’ll be able to travel and enjoy more time with her.”

Ray says he’s proud of the work done by the staff and board to bring hometown radio back to Hendricks County.

“From the very beginning, 98.9 WYRZ’s mission has been to be a teaching radio station for high school and college students, and I feel we’ve lived up to that.”

Ray says he will stay on at the station as advisor and sales manager.

His successor, Kevin Robinson, is a 40-year broadcast veteran of stations in Chicago, Phoenix, St. Louis, Louisville, Buffalo, and Lansing, in all areas, such as programming, branding, and voice-over work.

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected by the Board of Directors of the Hendricks County Educational Media Corporation to continue the teaching mission Shane Ray has established at 98.9 WYRZ,” Robinson says. “Shane’s passion shines through in everything the station does. The station and its unique playlist make this facility that Shane built truly special among radio brands.  We happen to be the only teaching facility in Indiana that does not charge fees to schools, students or volunteers to learn the great art of radio”.

Kevin lives in Whitestown, Indiana with his wife of 38 years, Monica.

Kevin can be reached at (314) 882-2148, (317) 769-0583 or krob@wyrz.org.

With his company, Robinson | Media, and partnership with the Audience Development Group, Robinson will continue to consult companies all over America.

Robinson has frequently been asked to be a featured speaker for state broadcast associations in Michigan, Indiana, and Missouri, as well as the National Association of Broadcasters.

98.9 WYRZ-LP returned FM radio to Hendricks County for the first time in almost a decade on October 26th, 2015. The Hendricks County Educational Media Corporation (HCEMC), a non-profit organization, is the license holder.

The studio, tower, and transmitter are located at 701 N. Green Street in Brownsburg. 98.9 WYRZ is known throughout Hendricks County for carrying high school sports, local news, locally produced programs, and Solid Gold Top-40 music from the late ’60s to the mid-’80s.

98.9 WYRZ is listener-supported and non-profit.
