INDIANAPOLIS—On Friday February 12, 2016, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Shelby Street to investigate a hit and run accident. Witnesses told arriving officers that a female in an SUV drove into the business then fled from the scene. Officers observed significant damage to the front of the Greiner’s SubShop business. Another witness came forward and directed officers to the suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Deanna Shumaker of Indianapolis, sitting in an SUV at the gas station directly across the street from the business. Officers were able to detain Shumaker without incident. During a safety check of Greiner’s SubShop, officers located an unconscious female employee trapped under debris. The employee was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, and she remains hospitalized at this time.
Detectives learned Shumaker intentionally drove her vehicle into the Greiner’s SubShop building. At this point in the investigation, detectives do not believe Shumaker realized there was an employee inside of the business, nor do investigators believe the employee was specifically targeted in this incident. Detectives are unsure what prompted Shumaker to drive her vehicle into the business. Shumaker was arrested on a preliminary charge of Criminal Recklessness. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review this case for a final charging decision. A current booking photo of Shumaker is unavailable at this time.
