Hit and Run Accident investigation leads to traffic stop resulting in the confiscation of heroin, cocaine, and stolen handgun

IMPDINDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer who was dispatched on a hit and run investigation, locates suspect vehicle and discovers heroin, cocaine, and stolen handgun.

Just before 9 p.m. on 09/26/2016, an officer with the IMPD was dispatched to the 1200 block of N Lasalle St on reports of a Hit and Run Accident. The responding officer received information from witnesses that a Chevy Impala had struck two vehicles after being asked to move and then fled from the scene. Witnesses were able to provide a suspect vehicle description and plate number to the officer to assist in the investigation.

The reporting officer broadcast the suspect and suspect vehicle’s description, which proved fruitful when another officer located and stopped the vehicle near 20th and Lasalle St. Officers identified the driver as 31-year-old Ryan Porter of Indianapolis, who was subsequently placed under arrest for Leaving the Scene of a Crash. While officers were conducting an inventory search of the vehicle, they discovered the following:

  • 16 grams of heroin
  • 13 grams of cocaine
  • Stolen handgun

Porter was preliminarily charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, Possession of a Handgun without a License, Dealing a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash causing Property Damage. Porter was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a final charging decision.

This is another example of the everyday impact the officers of the IMPD are having within the community they serve. Just as important, members of the community were willing and able to come forward with a credible suspect and suspect vehicle description, allowing officers to quickly locate and arrest him. As a result, dangerous drugs, a stolen firearm, and another offender are off the streets of Indianapolis. If you have any information regarding illegal or narcotics activities, please contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317)262-TIPS(8477). Information given via Crime Stoppers should be considered anonymous.
