INDIANAPOLIS – Sarah O’Brien, Vice-Chair for the Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE), announced she will be stepping down to address the care of her daughter who has dealt with a variety of medical issues over the years. She will serve through the next SBOE meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
In a statement to board members, O’Brien said “I have served on this board for over seven and a half years and continue to be proud of the work that has been done to improve education for all Hoosier students. I strongly believe that we have increased the quality of educational opportunities across our state and have confidence that this board will continue to do so in the years to come. I consider it a great honor to have had the privilege to work alongside all of you and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.”
Sarah O’Brien is a fourth-grade teacher at River Birch Elementary School in Avon. She was first appointed to the SBOE by Governor Mitch Daniels to represent the fourth congressional district in 2009. She was reappointed by Governor Mike Pence in 2013. Elected by the board via a unanimous vote, she became the board’s first vice-chair in 2015.
