Town of Brownsburg reminds residents of fireworks laws and safety guidelines

The Town of Brownsburg encourages residents to keep safety in mind as they celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, particularly when it comes to the use of fireworks. The Indiana fireworks law permits only individuals over 18 to purchase fireworks, and a person 18 or older must be present when anyone under 18 uses or possesses fireworks.

Consumer fireworks like roman candles, firecrackers, etc. may be set off only between 5 p.m. until 2 hours after sunset from June 29 through July 9; and between 10 a.m. and midnight on July 4. Sparklers, poppers, smoke bombs and the like may be used any time outside of the quiet hours 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Thousands of people each year are treated for fireworks-related injuries and 47 percent of fires reported on Independence Day are caused by fireworks accidents. Please keep these safety tips in mind:

•Don’t let children handle, play with or light fireworks.
•Use in a clear open area and keep the audience a safe distance away.
•Only light one firework at a time and don’t attempt to relight any “dud” firework.
•Have a fire extinguisher, water hose or a bucket of water nearby at all times.
•Never aim, point or throw fireworks at another person.
