Vigo and Putnam Counties—Wednesday morning at 10:58, Indiana State Police Master Trooper Polly Blackburn was patrolling US 41 in southern Vigo County, when she came upon a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of US 41 at State Road 246.
Preliminary investigation reveals 21-year-old Carl Melchert of Fairbanks, IN., was operating his maroon 2013 Chevy Cruze eastbound on SR 246, stopped for a stop sign at US 41, then pulled into the path of a southbound 2007 Mitsubishi pickup driven by 64-year-old Marvin E. Dabelow of Terre Haute, IN. The Mitsubishi pickup struck the driver’s side of the Chevrolet.
Melchert was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and treated and released for complaint of pain. Dabelow refused treatment at the scene.

Minutes later, at approximately 11:30 this morning, ISP Master Trooper Troy Sunier responded to a golf cart crash near the intersection of Putnam County roads 675 West and 125 North. Preliminary investigation revealed a 15-year-old female from Arlington, Texas, was operating a golf cart northbound on CR 675 W and attempted a U-turn near CR 125 N. In doing so, the juvenile traveled off the east edge of the roadway and overturned the golf cart in a ditch area. A passenger, 70-year-old Evelyn Yates of Greencastle, IN., complained of neck, shoulder and arm pain and was transported to Hendricks Regional Health for treatment.
Assisting were ISP Trooper Colton Maynor, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Operation Life, and Madison Township Fire/Rescue.
Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
