Washington, D.C. –Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly helped the Senate pass bipartisan legislation that would allow the United States to apply sanctions on North Korea and on those attempting to do business with North Korea. Donnelly also took to the Senate floor to call for U.S. leadership to counter North Korea’s dangerous actions.
During his speech, Donnelly said, “This has the potential to be a pivotal moment for the international effort to counter North Korea’s nuclear program, but the United States must lead the way. Strategic patience has worn thin, and it’s time to act – by expanding tough sanctions, by strengthening our missile defense programs, and by calling on the international community – and especially China – to act responsibly and decisively in the face of the threat that Kim Jong-Un poses to global security.”
As the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Donnelly has been a vocal advocate for stepping up the American response to North Korea’s missile-testing program. Donnelly visited South Korea in July 2015 to meet with U.S. and South Korean forces.
