Danville school receives advanced placement recognition

DANVILLE – Danville Community High School (DCHS) has been named to the 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll for expanding opportunity and improving performance for Advanced Placement students by the AP College Board.

“The AP District Honor Roll is awarded to schools that commit to increasing access to AP for underrepresented students while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher,” Director of Academic Services Morgan Walker said. “Danville has received this award for the third year in a row, which is extremely rare for Indiana schools.”

One of only 12 schools in the state to receive the honor, DCHS is the only school in Hendricks County to be recognized. The distinction was given to only 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada.

These Advanced Placement courses allow DCHS students to dig deeper into the fields of study they are interested in before committing to a major, Walker explained, and prepare students for the rigor of college courses. Students who test high enough on the yearly AP Exam can earn early college credit for less money, allowing them greater flexibility in their college schedule.

“As additional courses are added to our course catalog, our students are performing at a higher level than ever before,” she noted. “We appreciate the work of staff and students to achieve this honor.”

DCHS Principal Dr. P.J. Hamann agreed and said that this award is completely attributed to the dedication and hard work put in by the teachers and students.

“The content for AP courses is really challenging and the teachers have dedicated a lot of time to raise their teaching level to meet those challenges,” Hamann said. “They must make sure that what they present and the work that they ask the kids to do is focused on making sure those students are prepared.”

DCHS currently offers AP courses in statistics, calculus, physics, world history and U.S. history. Current DCHS AP teachers include Jamie Young, Jenny Quandt, Jim Glen, Michelle Henry and Tina Campbell.

“Advanced Placement teachers at Danville Community High School have been specifically trained to deliver content at a collegiate level,” Walker added. “Their meticulous preparation and advanced content knowledge ensure that our students are prepared for the exam given to all students each spring.”
