INDIANAPOLIS-Indiana Senate Democratic Assistant Leader Jean D. Breaux (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement regarding the Senate confirmation of the lieutenant governor:

“I believe in the governor’s right to appoint a lieutenant governor, and agree that former Lt. Governor Sue Ellsperman’s qualifications enable her to take on any position she chooses. However, I do want to take a moment to explain my vote.

“I was proud to have worked alongside Lt. Governor Ellspermann and regret the diversity of opinion that leaves with her exit.

“She is a skillful mediator. A tenacious problem-solver. A compromiser. A lawmaker who kept the interests of everyday Hoosiers close to heart.

“Lt. Governor Ellspermann is also a woman.

“She is a testament to young Hoosier women across our state that hard work pays off. Proof that even the highest offices of state government are achievable to those with a servant’s heart and a willingness to roll up their sleeves.

“The lack of sensitivity towards diversity that led to this morning’s unusual proceedings impacts how we move forward as a state.

“The governor’s decision for lieutenant governor matters. And when the person across the table looks like you, talks like you, and acts like you, it’s safe to say they’ll make decisions like you and that’s not the kind of leadership Hoosiers needs.

“To the new lieutenant governor I say good luck, you have big shoes to fill.”
